Keynote Speaker

Chia-yi Chua leads McCarthy Tétrault’s Tax Disputes group and is the co-chair of the firm’s Asia Practice Group. Chia-yi has acted for companies in all of Canada’s significant industries, and he has represented his clients at every level of the country’s court system, including the Supreme Court. Chia-yi has been recommended by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2010 - 2016 as one of Canada’s leading tax litigation lawyers, "praised for his skills in strategy and his ability to explain complex issues to clients" and as acting "for large domestic corporations in tax dispute resolution and litigation." Apart from being highly ranked by numerous legal publications, he is also listed as a leading lawyer in the current edition of Chambers Canada as one with a "stellar reputation in the tax litigation field in Canada".

In addition to his work at McCarthy Tétrault, Chia-yi serves as Singapore’s Honorary Consul-General in Toronto. He also currently serves as a Board Director of the Canada-China Business Council and on the Toronto Region Board of Trade’s Trade Accelerator Program Advisory Council. In 2009, the National Canadian Immigrant Magazine named Chia-yi as one of Canada’s Top 25 immigrants.

Chia-yi earned his JD from Osgoode Hall Law School, and he was called to the Ontario and British Columbia bars in 1995 and 1997, respectively. He is a frequent speaker at conferences, and he regularly addresses the Tax and Finance departments of top North American corporations.

Closing Remarks

Senator Victor Oh immigrated to Canada from Singapore in 1978. Since then, he has been a proud resident of Mississauga and a prominent member of the Chinese Canadian community. He has devoted himself to helping newcomers and their families establish themselves in Canada and start businesses.

Since his appointed to the Senate of Canada in January 2013, he has been committed to advancing the interests of seniors, youth and migrants, while promoting job creation, economic development and cultural diversity. He is a member of the Standing Senate Committees on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Agriculture and Forestry, and Aboriginal Peoples. He is currently a Vice Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association and a member of various parliamentary associations and friendship groups.

 

Prior to his appointment, Senator Oh was the founding chairman of the Canada-China Business Communication Council and former President of Wyford Holdings, a property development and management business.

Senator Oh received the Robert Boyne Memorial Award by the Peel Regional Police in 2007 and the prestigious Citation for Citizenship by the Government of Canada in 2008. In 2010, Senator Oh became the first Chinese Canadian to receive a tribute dinner by the Community Living Foundation of Mississauga in 26 years.
